Maria L. Marcus headshot
Maria L. Marcus
Joseph M. McLaughlin Chair and Professor of Law Emerita
Fordham Law mourns the loss of Maria Lenhoff Marcus, Joseph M. McLaughlin Chair and professor of law emerita and moderator of the Moot Court Board. The second woman to be granted tenure at the Law School, Marcus was a member of the faculty for 33 years, from 1978 until her retirement in 2011. She died April 27 at age 88.

In addition to her teaching and scholarship, Marcus shepherded multiple generations of students in Fordham Law’s Moot Court program. She served as the program’s faculty moderator and coach for 42 years—including for 10 years after her retirement.

“Countless Fordham lawyers have made their way in the profession by reliance on the ‘Marcus method’ of written and oral advocacy, which requires discipline, clarity of expression, and keen legal analysis,” said Dean Matthew Diller. “Many still hear Maria’s voice in their heads providing a firm compass to draw on when they encounter challenges.”

Before joining the Fordham Law faculty, Marcus had a distinguished legal career, serving as a fellow with the New York Bar Foundation, associate counsel for the NAACP’s national office, assistant attorney general for New York State, chief of the litigation bureau for the attorney general of New York State, and vice president of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. As one of the leading U.S. Supreme Court advocates in the 1970s, she argued—and won—six cases before the Court on behalf of New York state, including New York Telephone v. New York State Department of Labor (1979), which secured unemployment benefits for striking workers.

Donald Sharpe headshot
Donald Sharpe
Professor Emeritus
Fordham Law sadly lost Professor Emeritus Donald Sharpe, 87, on January 3, 2022. A member of the faculty for nearly 50 years who served under five deans, Sharpe not only shaped the Law School’s tax law curriculum, but diligently worked throughout his career to make legal education more affordable.

After working in private practice and teaching at Albany Law School, New York University’s Institute on Federal Taxation, and the Practising Law Institute, Sharpe joined Fordham Law in the fall of 1972. It was evident that teaching was one of Sharpe’s passions through the number of courses he taught—including estate planning and the evening section of income tax—and the lasting impact he had on his students. In their class evaluations of his classes in 2010, students called Sharpe a “tax genius,” as well as “kind, knowledgeable, and dedicated.” One student even commented, “If Professor Sharpe ever decides to retire, just replay his class tapes instead of hiring another professor.”

“Together with [Professor] Gus Katsoris, Don fleshed out the tax curriculum from a single course to a whole panoply of offerings,” said Dean Matthew Diller.

In the late 1980s, Sharpe led the effort to create the first student loan forgiveness program at Fordham Law, which has helped hundreds of graduates entering the public sector. He was named the chair of the student financial aid committee in 1988 by then Dean John D. Feerick ’61 and served on Fordham University’s Advisory Committee on Planned Charitable Giving.
